📢 Chickenpox Prevention Notice
Chickenpox is an acute, highly contagious disease that affects the entire body. All faculty, staff, and students are urged to stay alert and cooperate fully with preventive measures.
To maintain campus safety and prevent the spread of infection, confirmed cases are strictly prohibited from attending work or classes on campus. Please adhere to this guideline.
1. Symptoms
After the incubation period, early symptoms may appear 1–2 days before the rash, including:
• Mild fever (approximately 37.5–39°C)
• Fatigue, loss of appetite
• Headache, muscle and joint pain
Soon after, a rash appears and progresses to red bumps, blisters, and pustules, eventually forming scabs and healing. The rash typically starts on the face and scalp and spreads to the trunk and limbs. Recovery usually occurs within 2–4 weeks.
2. High Infectivity
The transmission rate among household members exceeds 85%.
3. Peak Seasons
Chickenpox most commonly occurs in winter and early spring.
4. Modes of Transmission
• Through droplets, airborne particles
• Direct contact with infected skin
• Contact with fluid from shingles blisters
• Indirect transmission via contaminated objects
🔸Scabs are not infectious
5. Incubation Period
Typically 10–21 days, with most cases occurring 14–16 days after exposure.
6. Infectious Period
• Begins 1–2 days before the rash appears
• Ends only when all lesions have completely scabbed over
• The most contagious period is before the rash appears
7. Susceptibility and Reinfection
• Individuals who have never been infected are susceptible
• Reinfection is rare
• After initial infection, the virus may remain dormant and reappear later as shingles (herpes zoster)
8. Prevention
• Vaccination: The chickenpox vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine; about 95% of recipients develop antibodies, with protection lasting at least 7 years
• If vaccinated individuals contract chickenpox, symptoms are usually mild
• Individuals without immunity are advised to get vaccinated after medical evaluation
• If symptoms develop, wear a mask and long-sleeved clothing and seek medical attention promptly
• Confirmed cases should refrain from attending class or work and follow medical advice for recovery
• Return to campus only after full scabbing, no infectivity, and a medical certificate has been issued
9. Guidance for Close Contacts
• Maintain good personal and environmental hygiene, wash hands frequently, and monitor health for 21 days after the last contact
• You may continue attending class or work during the observation period
• If symptoms appear, wear a mask, long sleeves, and seek medical care promptly
🔹Post-exposure Prophylaxis:
• Individuals without chickenpox antibodies may receive the vaccine within 72 hours of exposure
• Vaccination within 5 days still provides ~70% protection
• Even after 5 days, vaccination may still offer protection
• A medical evaluation is required before vaccination to rule out contraindications
